Credentialed Veterinary Technician

Job Title: Credentialed Veterinary Technician/Veterinary Assistant 

Department: Technical Support Staff

Reports to: Hospital Manager and Direct Supervisor

Job Summary

Doctors Office for Pets, located in Truckee, CA is currently looking for a full time or part-time Registered Veterinary Technician. Experienced Veterinary Assistants will also be considered. We provide compassionate care to both locals and visitors to the Tahoe area, and we are looking for an individual who cares deeply for animals and their owners. We strive to have a fun and team-oriented work environment.

Our ideal candidate has strong leadership and communication skills. Other required skills include proper animal handling, client education, anesthesia monitoring, surgical preparation/recovery, anesthesia monitoring, dentistry (radiographs and prophylaxis), proper radiographic technique, in-house laboratory use, hospital maintenance and customer service.

Veterinary Assistant

Job Title: Veterinary Assistant 

Department: Technical Support Staff

Reports to: Hospital Manager and Direct Supervisor

Job Summary

Our Veterinary Technicians play an integral role in providing excellent care to our patients as well as serving as major communicators for our hospital. Candidates must also possess excellent customer service and communication skills. A caring and compassionate attitude is required of all members of our team. This is an outstanding opportunity to join a hospital with a fun-loving, yet professional, atmosphere.

Education: Current Veterinary Technician Licensure is required (for CVTs)

Experience: Prior Veterinary experience is preferred

Skills and Abilities: 

  • Weigh animals
  • Clean cages and bathe animals
  • Sterilize equipment and clean examination tables and rooms
  • Restrain animals during examinations or vaccinations
  • Soothe upset or frightened animals
  • Administer medication prescribed by Veterinarians (e.g. by mixing it with food)
  • Observe animal behavior or health condition and report to the Vet
  • Help in cases of emergencies
  • Handle administrative duties such as scheduling appointments or calling patients in the examination room by priority
  • Keep accurate records and logs
  • Reassure clients that their pets are being cared for and explain issues (e.g. lack of appointments, insurance matters)
  • Advise pet owners on nutrition and healthcare

Physical Requirements: 

  • Dependable attendance
  • Able to lift up to 40lbs
  • Able to walk, bend, stand and reach constantly
  • Can work long days with sometimes irregular hours
  • Vision sufficient in order to maintain accurate records, recognize people and comprehend written direction
  • Able to speak and hear in order to give and receive information over the phone and in person
  • Fine motor skills to utilize equipment such as computers, phones, printers/scanners etc.
  • Able to be around pets, allergies can be controlled with medication

Registered/Licensed Veterinary Technician

Job Title: Registered/Licensed Veterinary Technician 

Department: Technical Support Staff

Education: Current Veterinary Technician Licensure is required 

Experience: Prior Veterinary experience is preferred

Skills and Abilities: 

  • Discuss proper treatment with doctor and implement plan.
  • IV catheter placement and monitoring, venipuncture, critical care 
  • Pharmacy Duties
  • Lab Work preparation and running of samples
  • Radiology
  • Prepares animals for treatment or surgery 
  •  Intubation of animals
  • Surgical assistance
  • Assists veterinarian during treatment or while in surgery
  • Maintaining and monitoring anesthetized patients
  • Know basic principles of monitoring respiration, arterial and venous blood pressures, ECG, temperature.
  • Know the basic principles of postoperative management and steps to take in case of emergency.
  • Be capable of administering analeptics, cardiovascular agents, antibiotics, and know dose, routes of administration, etc.
  • Be able to apply bandages, tourniquets, splints.
  • Record surgeries and controlled drugs in appropriate logs.
  • Ensure that all surgical supply charge sheets, fee charging worksheets, etc. are recorded and completed.
  • Call or ensure that other staff members are phoned to provide owners with status reports as directed by clinicians.
  • Perform dental procedures, ear cleaning, toenail trimming, bandaging, splinting, stitch removal, anal gland expression, enemas, radiology, and x-ray processing, etc., as necessary or directed by attending clinician.
  • Great communication skills

  • Proficiency with computer use and typing

  • Able to multitask and handle stressful situations
